Step 5: Interview Session

Did you know that mental health is becoming more and more common these days? We have interviewed some counselors to share more about mental health. Mental health issues need to be given more attention from time to time as this situation can be quite acute. Currently, the counseling service has conducted online counseling sessions. Therefore, anyone who is experiencing mental health, they can express all or part of their problems to the counselor.

Among the factors that cause mental health issues are from a person's genetics or ancestry, for example, a mother or father who has mental health issues such as Postpartum depression can be inherited by their child. Therefore, this group needs to be given attention and taken care of so as not to cause big issues such as hitting others and so on. Another factor in the occurrence of mental health issues is environmental factors, for example when a covid-19 pandemic occurs that causes many people to lose their jobs, this can cause a person to be too stressed because they think about how to support their family.

In addition, environmental factors can also be associated with physical abuse, for example, a child who is often abused by their parents can be a cause of mental issues to the child. This is because the child is too stressed because they have to face their parents who always abuse them. The last factor of mental health issues is from accidents, for example, Trauma is a major cause of brain injury. This usually involves a strong blow to the head. Common causes of brain injury are road accidents, falls, and attacks. Those with the highest risk are in the age group of 15 to 24 years and it is more involved in men. Brain injuries include minor injuries, which may make a person temporarily dizzy, leading to severe injuries, resulting in prolonged disability. This will cause some patients to experience prolonged effects such as dementia, mood disorders, or desire control issues.

However, public awareness in overcoming mental issues is still low and many still consider mental issues like a mental illness that is insane. Therefore, some people underestimate these mental health issues. Following the sharing of information on the effects of mental health issues from the counselors, the impact on individuals and society if these mental health issues are not taken care of will more and more Malaysians suffer from mental health disorders, low recovery rates, leading to death and high suicide rates. So, individuals and society who suffer from these mental health issues will feel that they are no longer meaningful and encourage them to do things out of control such as suicide if not prevented and treated immediately.

Therefore, counselors have shared some ways to overcome mental health issues among students that one can do. The solution depends on the situation. For example, if a student has a problem with a friend or student, the student can meet with a counselor or teacher at school to express all problems. In addition, if university students also experience severe stress due to online learning or many assignments, university students can report their problems to college. Everyone also needs to get rid of the thought that says it is perfect. In addition, family members are the best place for students to discuss all their problems. If students are not confident to express their feelings to family members, students can also express to friends they trust. Lectures and teachers also need to help students solve these mental health issues and not to stress them out causing stress. Therefore, everyone must understand and help every student who has mental issues by not putting too much pressure on them and always caring about them so that they do not feel neglected.

The most efficient solution chosen by the counselor is to balance the mind from the problems encountered. The next best solution is to ask for help when we need it, this is because not all things we can do alone. The assistance provided can also reduce the burden we are facing.  We also need to find time for us to calm ourselves down from the problems we face and we need to rest from the things that bother us. The activities that can reduce our stress are such as reading the Quran and reading quotes. The next way is we need to find beneficial activities that we can do such as cycling, jogging, and playing games. We also need to stay away from people who are the cause of our problems such as toxic people and friends who always ask us to do bad things. So we need to find friends who help us a lot when we are in trouble and they can be a place for us to express our feelings. We also can not push ourselves too much. So, we need to live daily life smoothly and not be too tangled. Next way, we need to try to find a cause to calm our own emotions. For example, I like looking at the sea and having fun. This is so that when a problem comes to us, we can control the stress and the problem nicely. The final solution is that we need to get to know ourselves and know how to deal with the strains we face.

The advice given by the counselor is that we need to change the way we think which is always saying that people with this mental problem are crazy people, in fact, they are just human beings facing big problems that they themselves cannot solve. Therefore, they need encouragement and support so that they become strong to face their problems. We also need to be constantly alert with family members and friends who have symptoms of this mental health problem. Don't let them get worse before we want to act to help them, in fact, we need to help them when we see them as stressed and always lonely. We need to always give support and encouragement to those who suffer from mental problems instead of criticizing and avoiding them. This is so that we can help reduce the occurrence of mental health problems in our country.
